Cork Flooring – a Nice Way to Decorate Your House

This is an idea my dad gave me. He had some renovation plans for his summer house, and wanted to put some cork on the walls, in shapes, for decoration. I liked the idea so I googled it, to see some examples. This is how I found out about cork flooring.

Cork happens to be a very interesting material to use. Most of the people know it as a material to make bottle stoppers, being waterproof, and preserving the fine taste of some very expensive vines. Nowadays, the above, cork is used to decorate houses, especially floors. Cork is a kind of wood, that after being used for bottle taps, is pressed together in form of plates. This wood is soft enough, to be given any shape. This type of flooring is also anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and allergen free, that's given it is cleaned properly. One of the things to make me think twice about decorating my own house with cork is the floor cleaning process. For example, being relatively waterproof, it has to be kept dry. Wet cleaning is allowed approximately once per month. But it has to be cleaned more often with dry mops and vacuum cleaners, to remove any dust. Also cork floorings have usually polyurethane based, or wax and oil finish. Basically you clean the finish rather than cork. Only solvent based waxes are suitable for cork floor cleaning

The maintenance of cork flooring includes not only cleaning it – it has to be protected also from UV-rays, because they tend to cause cork to fade.

However, if you are going to take care of your flooring it can last for over a hundred years, so overall it is a good investment.
