Green Chemistry

You can concoct your own eco-friendly homemade cleaners from simple, inexpensive ingredients. Some are readily available in supermarkets or DIY stores but you may have to ask for others at a pharmacy or specialist shop. They may not be quite as efficient as their modern, chemically laden alternatives so you may need to clean more frequently, allow more time for them to work and use more elbow grease.

Green chemistry set
  • soap(surfactant) - eco-friendly washing-up liquid
  • solvents - water mostly, but use turpentine, white spirit or eucalyptus oil for heavy-duty oil and grease
  • acids - white vinegar, lemon juice, carbonated water
  • alkalis - bicarbonate of soda, borax, washing soda
  • natural disinfectants - white vinegar, lemon juice, tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil
