5 ways to clean a slatted blind

1. With gloves

Dust the blinds by hand wearing cotton household gloves (available in all good cleaning departments). Brush off the dust as you go. For more neglected blinds dip your gloved hands into mild detergent solution, squeeze out excess water and get cleaning.

2. Special implement

There are many specialist gadgets, some of them quite ingenious allowing you to clean several slats at once. As with gloves shake dust off frequently and wash after use.

3. Hair drier or vacuum cleaner

A quick blast with the hair dryer can dislodge light coverings of dust. But don't forget to collect up the dust from where it has settled. Alternatively, use a vacuum cleaner with an appropriate attachment.

4. Shower or bath

Clean plastic or metal blinds in the shower or bath using the shower attachment. A few squirts of spray cleaner helps cut through grease. Alternatively, hang outside on the; washing line and use the garden hose.

5. On the floor

If it is easy to take down and you have enough room, spread out the blind on the floor with the slats closed. Perform the domestic cleaning using a duster, vacuum cleaner or clamp cloth (or all three). Turn over and clean the other side.

A tip for roller blinds: If you have wipe-clean roller blinds then go ahead and wipe them clean using a damp cloth and, if necessary, a little detergent. For fabric blinds dust regularly and thoroughly, using a duster or vacuum cleaner. Most roller blinds are treated to make the fabric stiffer so tackle stains with care. Try the gentle water and detergent method of removal, but follow the manufacturer's instructions and when in doubt use a proprietary stain remover.
