Cook's Dilemma

If you survive on takeaways or ready-meals, the most important item to keep clean will be the microwave. If you cook proper meals, your hob, oven and kitchen will get grubby from all the steam and grease, splashes and spills.

There are no easy miracle cleaners, so the best course of action is to be very organised and disciplined.

Hob habit

Get into the habit of wiping down the hob immediately after use. A damp cloth should be enough but always finish with a clean cloth otherwise some food may be left behind, which will harden when the heat is next on. Avoid abrasive cleaners and for hardened-on spills squeeze on a spongeful of warm sudsy water or cover with a soaked cloth, leave for at least an hour before wiping off with clean cloth or nylon scourer. Some fastidious fussers put aluminium foil underneath the burners, but frankly it looks horrible and as well as being an extravagant use of foil.

If, despite solicitous soaking and scrubbing, the marks persist you may have to resort to a commercial miracle cleaning spray — and then resolve to develop the hob habit.
