Tips to Clean Upholstered Furniture

Maintaining upholstered furniture clean will prolong the life of the fabrics, keeping them looking good for decades. Here are a few simple and easy tips how to clean upholstery, no matter whether it is a sofa, couch or chair.

Instructions
  1. Remove all loose cushions and vacuum the upholstery with a brush attachment to remove dust. Use a hand-held dusting brush to loosen dirt before vacuuming. Make sure to vacuum all areas of the furniture thoroughly, including back, sides, arms, skirt and the surface beneath the cushions.
  2. Vacuum the cushions from both sides and return them to their original place on the furniture.
  3. Make a solution by mixing 1 cup of warm water with ¼ cup of laundry detergent or liquid dish detergent. Use an electric mixer to blend the mixture thoroughly until the substance look like whipped cream.
  4. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and rub it into a small area on the back of the furniture to test for fading. Let dry, then inspect. If you notice any marks of fading or shrinkage, it would be better to use professional cleaning services to get the job done. If nothing wrong happens, proceed to the next step.
  5. Use the cloth to rub the solution onto the furniture, working section by section while using a scraper to scrape the solution away from the surface of the furniture.
  6. Use a damp cloth to rinse the upholstered furniture and allow it to dry. Use an electric fan blowing directly on the wet area to speed up the process of drying.
It is advisable to vacuum upholstered furniture weekly to remove dust and prevent heavy soiling of the fabric that may require professional cleaning services to deal with it.
