Useful Tips to Clean Up Cat Urine

When there is a cat in the house, you can always expect accidents. When such an accident occurs, it is important to act quickly, as the cat urine has a strong, pungent odor. Here are some useful tips how to efficiently remove the urine stain and the odor as well.

Household Products
Even the most stubborn stains can be removed with common household products without the need of utilizing professional cleaning services, and this fully applies to cat urine stains. First, blot the urine using paper towels, then pour a solution of water and vinegar directly onto the affected area and wait for five minutes. Next, spread baking soda over the area and drizzle with a solution of liquid dish-washing detergent and hydrogen peroxide. Let dry and vacuum. The urine odor should be eliminated and the fabric clean again.
Avoid Ammonia
Keep away ammonia-based solutions while there is a cat in your house. Ammonia mimics the smell of cat urine and will make your cat to do its job at the same wrong spot. However, in case you have used ammonia as a cleaning solution, at least make sure that your cat is away from the stain until the odor vanishes so it don't urinate again in the same spot.
All-purpose Cleaner
Many carpet cleaning companies recommend using all-purpose cleaner to remove cat urine stains from carpets or fabrics. Stain removers specifically designed for cat urine can be found at pet stores, and separated in three categories: bacterial, chemical and enzymatic. All three types work equally well in removing cat urine stains and eliminating the odor.
