Mildew

What is it?

When some of those millions of fungal spores flying around us find a nice, damp, warm place to live they breed and form ever-expanding unsightly, black growths which give off a fusty, musty smell. Danger zones are tiles - especially the grouting and sealants round sinks, baths, basins and showers.

Prevention

Keep the atmosphere as dry as possible with good ventilation and frequent wiping down of wet surfaces. If you have a severe moisture problem, install a fan.

Cure

Specialist mildew treatments are available that are efficient and easy to use,, but good results can be achieved with homemade alternatives.

For general staining spray with bleach solution (150ml household bleach in 1.5 litres water) leave for half an hour, scrub and rinse.

For tougher, blacker stains make a paste with borax and lemon juice or vinegar - leave on for half an hour and scrub off.

To remove mildew from tile grout mix 2 parts baking soda, I part borax and enough hot water to make a thick paste, apply to grout and scrub with a soft brush — rinse well.

To remove mould from sealant round the bath, basins and shower -trays wipe with neat vinegar then wipe with a paste of bicarbonate of soda.
